What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves a patient taking a small blue pill, Triazolam, about one hour prior to your visit. Triazolam is prescribed to patients to use at home more than 10 million times a year. There are no side effects and it will not interact with other medications that you may be taking.
What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry helps patients completely relax during treatment, allowing them to undergo a variety of treatments, from routine check-ups to more complex treatments. An added benefit to sedation dentistry is that it has somewhat of an amnesia affect that tends to prevent the patient from remembering anything about the visit. Sedation dentistry often referred to as sleep dentistry, also:
- Decreases gagging
- Enhances the effectiveness of anesthetic
- Decreases muscle and joint soreness
- Allows for more treatment to be completed in a shorter period of time, which may possibly reduce your total number of office visits
How long does the effects of sedation dentistry last?
It varies from patient to patient, but for most the effects last between 2-4 hours. So, we ask that you have someone available to drive you home.
Am I really asleep?
While patients tend to fall asleep, you will still be able to respond to verbal instructions. Sedation dentistry has proven very effective for even the most apprehensive patients.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
During your treatment, we will constantly monitor your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. A reversal agent is also available on hand that reverses the effects of the sedation medicine in 30 seconds or less. Our top priority is to provide our patients with the highest standard of dental care in a safe, comfortable and relaxing environment.
